“WHY ARE YOU THE BEST CANDIDATE?”

I’ve been asked this question frequently on the campaign trail and my first reaction is that humility is important

My record of education, experience and accomplishments speak for themselves and so I’m not inclined to brag and boast as others might be. If you’re reading this now, I’ll infer you’re an intelligent fellow Santafesino (or Santafesina) and concerned citizen who is doing their homework. So, I encourage you to review my CV below and the list of articles offered on this page that share my thoughts, ideas and values.

Akin to my belief that I am happy to simply be a human like everyone else, is my ability to connect with others and understand people. With over 30 years of experience as a writer, communications and engagement professional, and community builder, I’ve honed skills such as—listening to and taking genuine interest in others – that help me connect and serve our community best.

In addition to a lifetime commitment to community service most of my adult life, my commitment to promoting social and environmental justice, as well as cultural diversity and racial equity is supported by a Masters in International Public Law, Human Rights and Humanitarian Policy from Columbia University, and a BA in International Cultural Studies and Cultural Anthropology from UCLA.

Currently, I am a fellow in the Culture of Health Leadership Institute for Racial Equity, an 18-month program supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to enable fellows to work on local issues. Also, for over 10 years I served on the leadership teams and as a best practice consultant for all of the employee resource groups at a Fortune 100 company, where I was an employee for 23 years. This included our Pride, Disability, African-American, Latino, Veterans and Women’s groups.

For three years I served on the boards of the homeless shelter and human rights commission in our former hometown in New York, and here in Santa Fe I served on the Turquoise Trail Charter School Board of Governance for two years. During that time I also had a fellowship on educational reform in New Mexico through Excellence in Schools.

In the spring of 2023, I also served on the inaugural advisory committee of New Mexico’s Economic Development Department’s Healthy Food Financing Fund, which aims to increase food security and fresh food access for all New Mexicans.

I am also an artist, farmer, father of five, and a small business owner - this rich experience provides me with insights and the ability to understand mi gente, my fellow citizens of Santa Fe, in turn giving me better insight into our community’s needs as a prospective board member.

Moreover, I am a first generation American, New Mexican, college graduate, farmer, and now …electoral candidate. That’s a lot of firsts for me, but I have been fortunate enough over the last 55 years to have had a solid foundation of support from my Hispanic family and heritage.

Most importantly, and most relevant - is that I am grateful to have been given a Step Up in Life - through higher education.

DOIN' THE ROUNDS

October 19, 2023

This afternoon I had the pleasure of sitting down with Richard Eeds on his afternoon radio show on KTRC 1260 AM to chat about my run for the board of Santa Fe Community College (NM).

Tomorrow morning I will be chatting with Xubi Wilson on his Living on The Edge show on KSFR 101.1 FM to be broadcast this Saturday, October 21 at 11 AM.

Take a listen to my talk with Mr. Eeds here.

“ASK YOUR ABUELITA”

October 11, 2023

There’s an old adage in the newspaper business that dictates “if It bleeds it leads”

I say that if you appeal to old fashioned family values you just make the headlines as well.

Last night, I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to share my thoughts and perspective at the Santa Fe School Board Candidate Forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of Santa Fe County, The Santa Fe New Mexican at Santa Fe Community College (NM).

Likewise, I was lucky enough to get the lead in this morning’s recap on what candidates had to say too. Click to read here.

"Ask Your Abuelita" encapsulates so many things that I believe in and what I would like to bring as a board member to our community's college: community, family, unity, respect for elders, good old fashioned values - like the fact that education can give you a step up in life to improve your health, happiness and wellbeing, along with those of around you.

Mi abuelita con mijito - my dear late grandmother, Domitila, with my first born, Enzo, in 1999. We will welcome her back on El Dia de los Muertos, so that she may celebrate Enzo's upcoming wedding a week later.
